Matthew & Karine Maynard. Kitchen Railing, 2009. Forged & welded mild steel, Brazilian Cherry cap rail with hand-carved terminal. Wire-brushed with clear enamel finish. Polychromatic highlights in Gilder's paste.
The tread width for this staircase was greater than five feet, requiring hand grips on both sides. To find a creative solution, rather than a single hand grip with simple brackets, the wall-mounted portion of this railing was approached as an individual railing in itself. The newel post was built up in layers and sized to have definite presence in the room, with a large bundle of tapered and twisted round stock forming the upper portion of the post. The ribbon drops were placed to allow a grasping point for the lowest tread.
